Sally Mills and Graydon Bell realized their dream today. They coordinated the opening of the Muskoka Lawn Bowling Association’s new Bowling Green at Muskoka Highlands Golf Links. It was a day that celebrated 10 years or more of planning, applying for funding, being rebuffed from that funding and then finally getting the funding to move ahead with a new Lawn Bowling Green.
Starting in August of 2016, Mike Jefford of MJC Contracting transformed what was the lower parking lot at Muskoka Highlands into a beautiful piece of landscaping doubling as a Lawn Bowling Green. Taking a functioning parking lot that looks flat and turning it from 1 meter too high on one end into a dead-level playing surface took time.
By the third week of September, Mike was able to hand the playing surface over to Nic Bell, our superintendent here at Muskoka Highlands and our crew went to work setting the seed bed, doing a pre-seed fertilization, putting down the seed and tamping it in with our sand-pro. Then with patient watering and fertilizing (with a pure-sand base, the nutrients would not stick in the root zone so this had to happen lightly and frequently), the grass started to show and we awaited the first cut.
By early October, we were able to get the green cut twice – thank you Mother Nature for extending summer beyond where it normally goes!! With the seed established, we were able to put the green to bed, covering it with a woven plastic tarp. And there it sat until April of this year.
In the time since we removed the tarp and started to maintain the green, we have cut, fertilized and watered it many many times.
The green is now mostly playable and ready for you.
And here you are rolling bowls across the new green.
Welcome to Muskoka Lawn Bowling at Muskoka Highlands!!
