..is easy when you don’t destroy it in the first place. This is always the challenge of aerifying greens. It is easily the most aggressive set of procedures all within a 1 hour span.
- Special Food – is sprayed on the greens a few days before the aeration begins. The plant is given its special meal to survive a special procedure.
- Coring – a special machine that punches 1/4″holes into the green removing a plug – and more than 50,000 in any one green. That is a lot of material to handle. The cores are pulled to the side of the green and dropped by a box attached to the aerator. A crew of younger lads shovel the cores into waiting trailers for disposal onsite.
- TopDressing – a special trailer sprays a dusting of sand over the entire green. It is left to dry.
- Brushing then starts with a specialized broom that moves the sand forward and over the holes, making it easier for the sand to sink into the holes created by the aerator.
The greens are left to recover overnight. The next day, we use vibratory rollers on our greens mowers to settle the sand into the plant and the aeration holes. they go back into play immediately and, by all reports, were rolling pretty nicely from the get-go.
Proper planning, proper execution and great staff make this all work – in 18 hours!!
And you can hit great putts again!!
